Taste of Cartagena
Explore a Destination You've Never Been to...

1. Afro-Colombian Heritage & Culture:
Cartagena is rich in African influence, especially in places like San Basilio de Palenque, the first free Black town in the Americas. It’s a living monument to freedom, resilience, and vibrant culture — from drumming and dance to language and traditions.

🌆 2. Stunning Historic Charm:
Inside the Walled City, you’ll stroll through colorful colonial streets filled with bougainvillea, balconies, and centuries-old architecture. Cartagena is like stepping into a real-life postcard — full of soul, history, and energy.

🌴 3. Caribbean Vibes + Latin Flavor:
Cartagena sits right on the Caribbean coast, so you get the best of tropical beaches and Latin nightlife. Sip a fresh coconut on Playa Blanca by day, then dance to salsa rhythms in Getsemaní by night.

🌺 4. Food, Flavor & Freshness:
From ceviche and arepas to coconut rice and fried plantains, Cartagena’s food scene is unmatched. Every meal is a celebration of culture — bold, fresh, and made with love.

🎉 5. It's an Experience, Not Just a Destination:
A trip to Cartagena isn’t just about sightseeing. It’s about connection — with the people, the past, the culture, and most importantly, yourself. Whether you're looking for sisterhood, self-care, or new adventure, this city has something magical for you.

Learn More About This Destination

🌍  Cartagena Was Once One of the Wealthiest Cities in the Americas

During the colonial era, Cartagena was a major port for Spanish treasure fleets transporting gold, silver, and enslaved Africans. Its wealth made it a constant target for pirates — which is why it’s surrounded by massive stone walls and forts like Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the largest Spanish fort in the Americas.

🗣️ Palenquero — A Unique African-Spanish Creole Language — Is Still Spoken Nearby

In San Basilio de Palenque, just outside Cartagena, locals speak Palenquero, a rare creole language that blends Spanish with African languages. It’s one of the few surviving languages of its kind in the world and is recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

💃🏾 The City Celebrates Its Own Version of Carnival — "Fiestas de Independencia"

While Cartagena is not traditionally known for Carnival like Barranquilla, its Independence Festival in November is a vibrant, Afro-Caribbean celebration full of parades, music, dance, and traditional costumes. It commemorates Cartagena’s independence from Spain — it was the first Colombian city to declare it in 1811!
